We’ve spent hours reading stories of how social media was used out of context and caused brands a lot of pain, followers and money.

The moral of the story – Anyone (brands big and small) can make a mistake.

Let’s learn from their mistakes, shall we?

Tweeting about trending topics can be a great idea… But if you’re going to join the conversation, be sure it’s not a tasteless “joke” like KitchenAid’s tasteless joke concerning U.S. President Obama’s deceased grandmother.

During the presidential debate, Kitchen Aid tweeted saying…

“Obamas gma even knew it was going 2 b bad! She died 3 days b4 he became president #nbcpolitics”

Although the tweet was deleted just a few minutes after, the damage was already done. Twitter users and the media jumped into action and the company was forced to send out numerous apologies.

Moral of the story… Make sure whoever is tweeting for your business is not only digitally savvy but knows how to handle themselves professionally on social media. And when in doubt… Avoid joining conversations surrounding politics, religion or other controversial topics.
