How to know if being a virtual assistant is right for you

How to know if being a virtual assistant is right for you

I’m sure you have heard a lot of people on social media talking about how they can work from anywhere and make money online from their computers. All they do is assist business owners with tasks that they need and you get paid, right? Well, being a virtual assistant is a lot more than just working anywhere from your computer. There are skill sets you will need to learn, software systems to use, and developing people skills! Here are a few things virtual assistants do that might help you determine if this career path is for you.

Do you have the discipline to manage yourself, day in and day out with tasks and responsibilities that you have to do?

Being your own boss means having complete freedom with your time. This can be a good and a bad thing if you don’t know how to properly manage your time and keep yourself motivated to do the work that you need to do.

Can you handle rejection and not take everything personally?

One thing about being a virtual assistant is that you will need to market yourself and network with other business owners. That means reaching out and asking if they need any assistance in their business; now sometimes people will be kind and kindly say no, and sometimes people are quite rude about how they respond to you. When this happens you will need to learn how to not take everything personally and handle rejection when it occurs. One thing to remember is that they are rejecting the opportunity, not you.

Can you handle working by yourself for days at a time?

Usually this job allows you to work from anywhere. And most of the time you will be home possibly by yourself, most of the day. Keeping yourself on track, not getting distracted, and keeping yourself busy and productive are the keys to success when being a VA. It can get lonely sometimes so it’s important to make sure you still receive human interaction at some point throughout the day. Whether that’s calling a friend once your work day is over, working at a coffee shop or co-working space around other people, or simply putting yourself in situations to talk to people.

Are you willing to always be learning and improving your skills?

If you’re a VA that works in social media or you do more marketing tasks for business owners, one thing that is important is staying up to date on all platform changes, trends and new updates that occur across social media. It also means watching videos, listening to podcasts, reading books or taking a course on the area that you specialize in. Learning and improving your skill sets make you more valuable and knowledgeable as a VA. You can charge more for your services and get better results for your clients.

There are a lot of things to think about before deciding to quit your job or dedicate a lot of your time to being a VA. It’s important that you do a lot of research and find a mentor that you can look up to, to help you along the way. Being a virtual assistant is so rewarding, and being able to work from anywhere and help people with their businesses is such an amazing feeling and I truly love what I do.
