Case Study #22 | LG’s Fails At #BendGate Twitter Roast

We’ve spent hours reading stories of how social media was used out of context and caused brands a lot of pain, followers and money.

The moral of the story – Anyone (brands big and small) can make a mistake.

Let’s learn from their mistakes, shall we?

Do you remember Apple’s #BendGate issue? Where their iPhones were bending for some people?

LG tried to make fun of the issue by sending out a tweet saying…

“Our smartphones don’t bend, they are naturally curved ;).”

from their France account to promote their bendy G Flex. Their Twitter Roast failed though…

The tweet was sent from an iPhone.

What can we learn from this?

Besides the obvious, be loyal to your own brand conversation, let’s discuss how this could apply to your brand.

It’s easy to poke fun at your competitors and make claims about your own company… But when you do this, be sure the claims are making are true and you’ve got yourself covered.

If you want to build your brand around making jokes (like Wendy’s) then go for it! But be sure to think through what you’re doing and saying before you do it.
