We’ve spent hours reading stories of how social media was used out of context and caused brands a lot of pain, followers and money.
The moral of the story – Anyone (brands big and small) can make a mistake.
Let’s learn from their mistakes, shall we?
On Friday, July 20th, 2012, the National Rifle Association made an insensitive tweet.
“Good morning, shooters. Happy Friday! Weekend plans?”
What would have seemed to be an appropriate tweet was shared on the same day as the Aurora, Colo. Shooting.
Understandably, the NRA was shown no sympathy and tweeters launched into action, sharing their disapproval.
The tweet was taken down hours later, and a spokesperson said that “A single individual, unaware of the events in Colorado, tweeted a comment that is being completely taken out of context.”
The lesson here? Monitor current events and trending topics before tweeting!
